Siri what are your political views? Hey everybody, Welcome to Peace News Now, your daily journal of peaceful resistance! I’m DerrickJ. Today’s Wednesday, November 18th 2013. 1 ounce of silver is 21 dollars. 1 Bitcoin is 650 dollars. This episode is brought to you by friends of http://WeUseCoins.com . You’ve probably been hearing a lot about bitcoin in the news. If you’d like to learn more about how you can use this new currency, I recommend you visit http://WeUseCoins.com . It’s the perfect launching pad to get started. That’s http://WeUseCoins.com
Siri is the voice-activated personal assistant feature in Apple’s iPhones. In a video going viral this week, one iPhone user discovers that asking Siri, “What are your political views” yields the result Ron Paul. Siri also provides a brief excerpt from Ron Paul’s Wikipedia page.
Some suggested the phenomenon was arising from a mere coincidence: Ron Paul supporters are a vocal, tech-savvy group, making the politician’s name particularly likely to pop up in search results. But even when the memory is completely wiped and a brand new iPhone is started up, even with no other information about the user, Siri’s reply is the same.
On a related note, Ron Paul’s son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, recently defended Apple’s tax practices, and called on Congress to apologize for berating, quote, “one of America’s greatest success stories.”
Apple hasn’t explained why Siri favors Ron Paul, but as one Reddit reader cheered, quote, “Siri understands the plain language of the Constitution.”
In other news, bitcoin rose over one hundred and fifty dollars today. This mostly occurred during and after the historic first-ever Congressional Hearing on Virtual Currencies. Peace News Now and The Bitcoin Group collaborated on a special live-broadcast commentary of the hearing. Guests featured Jeffrey Tucker of Laizes Faire Book Club at LFB.org and Adam Levine of Let’s Talk Bitcoin. Davi Barker of ShinyBadges.com and Michele Seven of MicheleSeven.com also lent their expertise to the discussion. The meeting centered around antiquated bureaucrats at the Federal Government doing their best to control something they don’t understand. In the end, it was decided there will be more hearings in the future. Most if not all of the 7 panelists interviewed proclaimed that bitcoin had positive, legitimate uses, despite the potential for misuse. Bitcoin was the #1 search trending on Google today. A historic day for bitcoin.
Speaking of bitcoin, a friend of the show is writing a book that you should check out at http://AnonymousBitcoinBook.com — There you’ll find tips to help you navigate the world of bitcoin, a little bit safer. Most recently, the author blogged about how to secure your bitcoins offline, in a practice called “Cold Storage.” How do you implement cold storage on your own…and do it securely? http://AnonymousBitcoinBook.com
In other news, a tricky new law in California repeals some old restrictions on operating a food business out of your home. Those who wanted to make fudge, lollipops, sugar cones, and other sweet treats used to be forbidden. Now, in an attempt to raise more tax revenue for California, the lawmakers are allowing individuals to work for themselves at home. Isn’t that nice of the bureaucrats? To ALLOW you to make food in your own home and then trade it with people? So long as they get a cut, of course. You might be better off not asking their permission.
Speaking of permission, Austin Peterson at LibertarianRepublic.com writes this week that Big Brother fined a mother $10 after she failed to include Ritz crackers in her kids’ school lunch. If a child’s lunch is deemed “unbalanced,” parents are fined. Lunches are required to conform to the government’s Food Guide.
What was the criminally inadequate lunch? Leftover roast beef and potatoes, an orange, carrots and milk. But she failed to supply “grains”. The school provided the child with supplemental Ritz Crackers and sent home the $10 fine.
Kristen wrote that, quote, ‘had she sent along lunches consisting of, “microwave Kraft Dinner and a hot dog, a package of fruit twists, a Cheestring, and a juice box” those lunches would have sailed right through. But her whole food, homemade lunches? They lacked Ritz Crackers.’
